Zooplankton was collected from the Canadian Beaufort Sea shelf in July and September 1984, and July to September 1985. In the year 1984, 18 and 16 net samples were collected with a 763 µm Wisconsin and 500 µm neuston gear, respectively, from 18 stations. In the year 1985, 123, 54 and 229 net samples were collected with a 500 µm neuston, 85 µm bongo and 500 µm bongo gear, respectively, from 60 stations. Neuston gear sampled at the water surface while other gear sampled the water column. In the year 1984, 309068 plankton specimens were caught, with 64 taxonomic identifications from 15 taxonomic groups (phyla, classes, orders or suborders). In the year 1985 there were 210 taxonomic identifications, representative of 32 taxonomic groups, and a total catch of 22.38 million specimens. Copepods were predominant in all catches. Wet and dry biomass data of individual specimens for most plankton species are given for the samples of the year 1985. The maximum sample dry biomass for the 985 neuston and 500 µm bongo samples was 10.89 and 69.31 g/100 m3 of water filtered, respectively. Length-frequency data are given for 20 species, mostly copepods, captured in 23 (year 1985) 500 µm bongo net samples.

Identification in lab with the aid of reference texts, keys and collections, and verified as required. Three separate labs processed the 85 µm bongo net, 1984 Wisconsin / neuston samples and the 1985 neuston / 500 µm Bongo net samples respectively. For details contact authors

All specimens were captured in the plankton nets and were identified to the species level whenever possible with the following exceptions: for the 85 µm bongo net samples specimens were identified to the taxonomic group level for the Cumacean and Isopoda groups, and almost exclusively to the group level for the Rotifera, Polychaeta and Bivalvia groups. For the 763 µm Wisconsin, neuston and 500 µm bongo net samples processed by the second laboratory, specimens were identified to the taxonomic group level for the Foraminiferida and Ostracoda groups. Specimen identification data for the 1985 neuston and 500 µm bongo samples are reported with the most common species identified to genus or species, while the balance; the 1984 samples and the 1985 85µm bongo and Wisconsin net samples are identified to taxonomic group level. For the copepod group specimens caught in 85 µm net samples life history, stage or size range was fully described. All taxonomic classifications have been updated to meet classification standards represented in the International Taxonomy Information System (ITIS) database (www.itis.usda.gov ) as of May 2006.

Plankton samples in 1984 were collected in two periods July 14th to 24th and September 7th to 9th using two gear type, the 500 µm (mesh size) Neuston sampler and a 763 µm Wisconsin sampler. Sampling for 1985, was conducted from July 18th to September 12th and consisted of three gear types; a 500µm Neuston sampler, and 85µm and 500 µm Bongo sampler. All specimens captured in the plankton nets were identified to the species level whenever possible, with the following exceptions. For the 85 µm bongo net samples specimens were identified to the taxonomic group level for the Cumacean and lsopoda groups, and almost exclusively to the group level for the Rotifera, Polychaeta and Bivalvia groups. For the 763 µm Wisconsin, neuston and 500 µm bongo net samples processed by the second laboratory, specimens were identified to the taxonomic group level for the Foraminiferida and Ostracoda groups. All plankton samples were preserved in a solution of seawater and 5% non-buffered formalin. Specimen identification data for the 1985 neuston and 500 µm bongo samples processed by the third laboratory are reported with only the most common species identified to genus or species, while the balance are identified to taxonomic group level. Specimens were identified with the aid of reference texts, keys and collections, and verified as required. Interlaboratory calibrations for specimen identification were not made. Life history stage of specimens was identified for the 85 µm bongo samples, whereas for all other samples stage was assigned infrequently, if at all. For Copepoda group specimens caught in 85 µm net samples life history stage or size range was fully described (adult, copepodite, nauplius). In the laboratory, the 1984 neuston and Wisconsin net samples were resieved through a 425 µm screen using a water rinse, while the 1985 neuston and 500 µm bongo net samples were resieved through a 500 µm Endicott screen, with all ichthyoplankton removed and stored in 70% ethanol. The 1985 85 µm bongo net samples were similarly processed, but washed through an 80 µm screen. The 85 µm net samples were initially scanned under a low power (X6 or X12) microscope to remove large organisms (>6-7 mm), which were identified and counted. The following sampling protocol was followed. After removal of large organisms the remainder of the sample was poured into a calibrated beaker and made up to some known volume, typically 100 mL, with water. A Hensen- Stempel pipette was used to remove a sub-sample volume (e.g. 1 mL from 100 mL for a 1/100 subsample). If this sub-sample was estimated to have more than 300 specimens in total, then it was further diluted to some standard volume and sub-sampled until the point when the final subsample had about 300 total number of specimens. Generally two stages of sub-sampling were made. Starting with the smallest sub-sample first, each sub-sample was then sorted and specimens were identified and counted until at least five specimens of most individual species, and up to a total of about 300, had been counted. The 1984 neuston and 763µm Wisconsin net samples were initially sorted with the naked eye. All specimens were removed and placed in taxonomic group specific vials. Most samples were identified and counted in entirety, with subsampling used where total sample count was estimated to be greater than 1000. The taxonomic groups for these latter samples were split using a two chamber Folsom Splitter. Sub-samples were not split to a pre-determined number per subsample, so sub-sample numbers varied from 60 to 2700 with most in the 400-600 range. Specimens in the split fraction were counted, identified and appropriately extrapolated to the larger sample. The 1985 neuston and 500 µm bongo net samples were processed as follows. If a sample contained less than 300 specimens in total then the sample was completely counted and all specimens identified. Some samples that had more than 300 specimens in total but less than 300 copepods were counted in entirety, with the exception of those taxonomic groups in excess of 1000 specimens which were sub-sampled as described below. Other than this exception, samples containing more than 300 specimens were initially sorted with the naked eye such that all specimens, with the exceptions of those from the copepod group, other taxonomic groups represented by more than 1000 specimens and specimens not visible to the naked eye, were removed and placed in taxonomic group specific vials. If, for each taxonomic group, there were 100 or less specimens then all specimens were identified to the species level. If a group contained between 101 and 1000 specimens, a random subsample of 100 was made and identified to the species level, the remaining specimens counted and then identified based on extrapolation from the 100 specimen sub-sample. All unanalyzed split fractions were placed in 70% ethanol and stored at DFO, Winnipeg. Count estimates derived from the splitting techniques were verified for accuracy by conducting repeated split tests on selected samples. For more detail refer to the original paper.
