Abstract:
Macrofauna has been sampled during R/V Polarstern research cruise ARK VIII/3 in August-September (1st August til 1st October) 1991 at 30 stations, at water depths of 1018-4478 m, along a transect extending between Northern Svalbard and the Makarov Basin, as a basis for understanding aspects of the benthic ecology of the Arctic Ocean. The method of box core was used. Animals counts were done according to convention: sorting under a stereo microscope after sieving and preservations. A 250µm mesh was used for sieving. Accuracy is unknown. Box cores likely lose some light epifauna during coring process, but this is the most common deep-sea infauna collection tool used. Species numbers, abundances and biomasses were extremely low, and generally varied between 0 to 11/0.02 m super(2), 0 to 850 individuals/m super(2), and 0 to 82.65 g/m super(2), respectively. A total of 42 species was found. The amphipod Jassa marmorata was the most common species. Both numbers and biomasses of suspension-feeding species increased towards the Lomonosov Ridge, probably due to lateral transport of organic material by deep currents along the ridge. Taxonomic_Completeness:
The identification of Porifera and Polychaeta for st. 2157-2190 was supported by Prof. V. Koltun and Dr. G. Buzhinskaja of the Zoological Museum of St. Petersburg (Russia). Invertebrates for st.2191-2214 were identified to genus or species level, if possible (Sars 1890, 1899; Gaevskaya, 1948; Wesenburg-Lund 1947, 1948, 1950, 1951; Hartmann-Schröder 1996; Lincoln 1950). Sponges identification was based on reference samples from other Arctic regions previously identified by Prof. Koltun, Zool. Institute St. Petersburg.

Field: During the "Polarstern" Expedition ARK 8/3 30 stations were sampled in August/September 1991 along a transect from Northern Svalbard towards the Eurasian Basin to the Makarov Basin. 17 stations were sampled along a transect from the North Pole crossing the Amundsen Basin towards the Morris Jesup Rise and the Yermak Plateau. Sampling was carried out with a 0.25 m2 box core (1 per station). Due to ship time at several stations the corer had to be shared by different working groups, therefore, a sub-sampler of 0.02 m2 was used. In case a separate corer was run for biology, 5 to 7 sub-samplers were taken out of the big box for comparison of the samples. Therefore, abundances and biomasses are originally given as median numbers per 0.02 m2. For the stations, where only a single sub-sampler was taken, the raw data are given. At stations 2213 and 2214, cored sediments to a depth of 20 cm were sieved in a whole. Abundance and biomass were calculated per 0.02 m2, whereas species numbers were given per 0.25 m2. In this database all abundance and biomass values were also converted to 1 m2 to comply with OBIS requirements. Lab: The samples were washed gently over a mesh size of 0.5 mm and fixed in 4% buffered formalin. After sorting the organisms were kept in 70% alcohol. Preserved samples were sorted and identified to the lowest taxon possible under stereo microscopes in the lab. The identification of Porifera and Polychaeta was supported by Prof. V. Koltun and Dr. G. Buzhinskaja of the Zoological Museum of St. Petersburg (Russia).
