Drifting Buoys
Drifters are used to take Lagrangian measurements of currents, as opposed to Eulerian measurements which were described above. As their name implies, drifting buoys are not anchored to the bottom but are allowed to drift over time. It is assumed that they remain with the same water parcel as they are pushed around. Their position and data about the seawater are transmitted to satellites.
This was project completed in conjunction with the North Pacific Research Board (NPRB). The trajectories of the drifters went west from Nunivak Island. This was a surprise to researchers, as they expected the drifters to track mostly to the north. Drifting data is useful in examining small, local currents.
