NEXRAD (the next-generation radar)
The National Weather Service (NWS) operates a network of Dopple radars in the US. Precipitation and atmospheric movement (or wind) are detected by NEXRAD, which returns data that can be displayed as patterns of weather and its movement.

WSR-88D ([National] Weather Surveillance Radar, 1988, Doppler)
WSR-88D NEXRAD Radar Imagery Description: (Experimental) Radar imagary is provided in a georeferenced format using associated "World" files. Each radar image is created separately with no backgrounds on the image and in a standard Geographic Projection. This allows anyone with GIS software to import the image and add any overlaying dataset without the distraction of unwanted layers.
