MODIS Chlorophyll-a
“Ocean color” is light intensity at visible wavelengths. Ocean color indicates the quantity and quality of minerals and substances in the ocean, such as phytoplankton and inorganic particulates. For example, data received from an ocean color satellite such as the Seaviewing Wide Field-of view Sensor (SeaWiFS) can detect large scale algal blooms. Ocean color observations made from the earth's orbit are the only way to provide a global picture of biological activity in the world's oceans.
