Title:
Whale broad-scale distribution southeastern Bering Sea 2008, Friday, N.
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: spreadsheet
Description:
Abstract:
As one component of the Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Program (BSIERP), three marine mammal observers conducted visual surveys along transect lines sampled during the AFSC/NOAA walleye pollock stock assessment cruise, from 1 June to 30 July 2008. Whale sightings included fin (78), humpback (47), minke (7), sei (1), gray (1), sperm (4), killer (35), and Baird’s beaked (2) as well as harbor (56) and Dall’s (172) porpoise. Data from this project will be combined with oceanographic and prey data to analyze habitat selection, submitted to project B92 (Top predator hotspot persistence), and used to investigate if cetacean sighting match predator-prey fields predicted by the FEAST model (M.47).
Purpose:
To estimate density and abundance of cetaceans in the survey area of the AFSC/NOAA walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) acoustic stock assessment survey. We will also model cetacean distribution data and density estimates in terms of oceanographic and bathymetric variables and prey distribution and density to investigate cetacean habitat characteristics and to create predictive models of cetacean distribution. All analyses will focus on fin and humpback whales, but other cetaceans will be included as sample sizes permit.

The funding was provided by NPRB as part of the BEST-BSIERP project to the Cetacean Ecology and Assessment Program, National Marine Mammal Laboratory, Alaska Fisheries Science Center, National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA Fisheries.
Sighting survey was conducted under MMPA Permit No. 782-1719.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Data was collected using the software WINCRUZ version 6.24 from 3 June to 6 July 2008 and version 8.03 from 11 to 30 July 2008 (<http://swfsc.noaa.gov/textblock.aspx?Division=PRD&ParentMenuId=147&id=1446>) and standard line transect protocols as described in Moore et al. 2002; Progress in Oceanography. Accuracy was ensured by reviewing and editing the data in the field on a daily basis. Post cruise processing included data extraction and errror checking using customized software (Paul Wade, National Marine Mammal Laboratory). Tracklines and sightings were plotted in ArcMap to check for accuracy.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Survey data collected with Wincruz (Windows Real Time Sighting-Effort Event Logger developed by Robert Holland at Southwest Fisheries Science Center).
Completeness_Report:
Because of the change in WinCruz version during the cruise, sightings of pinnipeds and ships were not consistently recorded. In addition, they are not a target of this study and not used in the analysis. Therefore, these records were deleted.
