Oceanographic pressure sensors can be used to measure the depth of a device in the water. Often times, scientists survey the deep water profile by lowering for instance a CTD (link) into the water to depth far below the eye can see. In order to make sense of the collected data one needs to know the exact depth from where the data was taken and that is done with the use of pressure sensors. A pressure sensor consists of a membrane that basically measures the weight of the water column above it, from which the sensor calculates the actual depth in the water.
