We are going to address the different sections of this tool in five parts.
A. Click on the map in the upper left to redirect to a specific region or use the drop-down list on the far right to zoom into a specific region.
B. Choose what layers to turn on in the main viewing area. Learn more about the Base Maps. The default is Alaska Bathymetry. The menu in the left column expands as you click on a heading.
Once you have chosen new layers you need to click the Redraw map symbol in the top left.
You can turn on multiple layers. Remember to deselect layers you no longer want to see before clicking the arrow to redraw the map.
C. Once you have the layers turned on that interest you; zoom into a specific area or change the map size, or the projection view over in the far right column.
D. Not all layers will have data in all regions. Some layers will cover up other layers (if you have too many turned on) and you will miss what is significant in the display. In this example we have the Polar map chosen with the ROMS PWS Salinity - the small section of salinity color is shown near the center of the following image. There isn't anything displayed in the Arctic region - where we were looking. If you select a new region, Alaska Mapserver will redraw without you clicking the arrow "redraw map."
