Prince William Sound Field Experiment

July 19-August 3, 2009

The 'Field' portion of the experiment is now complete. On to the paperwork, discussion, dissemination, etc. To assist you in writing your collaborative papers, or in delivering talks on the work performed, AOOS Data Management staff compiled the following information.

The job's not done until...

knowles bay hut and pristine surroundings

The HF Radar Team (Mark Johnson, Hank Statscewich, Rachel Potter and Steve Sweet) went to Prince William Sound as part of Sound Predictions. To the right is an image of how we left Knowles Bay with four slingloads awaiting pickup but otherwise devoid of HFR activities.

Hank Statscewich took excellent photos.

Original media publications:

Phase 2

  • Data assimilation, serving data and visualization of the data
    • Confirming that the DMAC team has the corrected/adjusted files to serve to others
    • Loading all the materials into the Alaska Marine Information System (AMIS)
  • Research, writing papers, presenting findings and results
  • Please review the following abstracts that the DMAC collected together for your use (so that we could speak about one another's work in a concerted fashion.) Please send any changes to dm@aoos.org or Mark Johnson

Goal

The Goals of the Prince William Sound Field Experiment {Improving Our Ability to Observe and Forecast Changes in Alaska's Oceans} were three-fold:

  • To demonstrate AOOS capabilities
  • To Validate the ROMS model
  • To determine whether/how adding additional instrumentation into the model would (positively) impact predicting ocean state in oil spill trajectory modeling {Ask: Does adding HF radar data to the model make the forecast more accurate?}

Fabulous job on Phase 1 everyone!
