Seasonal Ice Zone Observing Network (SIZONet)

HEM Ice Thickness

SIZONet is an integrated observing system, focusing on the western Arctic, contributing substantially to broader pan-Arctic efforts involving researchers from different nations in the context of the International Polar Year (IPY).

In addition to building up a robust network of researchers, Arctic residents, different institutions with need for sea-ice information and other stakeholders, this project delivers infrastructure and an integrated data set of sea ice observations, thereby leaving a legacy that allows for continued, long-term observations beyond the intensive field phase and testbed of the IPY.

Specific goals of the project include:

  1. Identify sea-ice variables to help answer key scientific questions.
  2. Provide a framework for assessing sea-ice observations in the context of large-scale spatial and temporal variability.
  3. Create a consistent protocol for integrated sea ice observations.
  4. Complete a series of networked, integrated pan-Arctic seasonal ice zone observations, and disseminate the data to relevant user groups through appropriate archival and distribution centers.

The AOOS Data Management role

AOOS Data Management plays a role helping SIZONet by storing the data in the native format as provided by PIs. We have also created a tool which researchers may use to view portions of the data (see Sea Ice and Walrus project.) More information about the Sea Ice and Walrus project is available in our portfolio under 'Walrus Survey.'
